BREAST REVISION SURGERY

While the results of a breast augmentation procedure will last for years to come, breast implants are not considered lifetime devices, and issues may arise down the road that necessitates a revision procedure.

What is breast revision surgery?

Breast revision surgery is a solution for women experiencing implant complications or seeking to change implant size, type, or profile, aiming to restore a pleasing chest appearance and improve overall comfort and quality of life. This procedure often involves less downtime than the initial augmentation because it can reuse the same incisions and utilize the existing breast pocket.

Common Reasons for Breast Revision Surgery

There are a number of reasons a patient may consider revision breast augmentation surgery, and the procedure can provide a variety of benefits, depending on one’s individual needs and goals

  • Capsular Contraction

  • Breast Implant Upgrade / Removal

  • Breast Asymmetry

  • Implant Site Change & Appearance

  • General Dissatisfaction

Capsular Contracture: often occurs in patients with old silicone implants that have hardened due to rupture or leakage. Dr. Chow has extensive experience in removing old implants and capsules, replacing them with new ones to enhance shape and feel.

Implant Malposition: implants can fall too low, too high, or to the sides. Dr. Chow devises personalized plans, including implant removal, selection of appropriate replacements, adjusting the pocket, and revising the capsule, which may involve tightening, shaping, or using techniques like GalaFLEX® or Strattice™.

Implant Upgrade/Removal: Patients may opt for breast implant upgrades or removal due to improved implant options, such as cohesive silicone gel implants. Asymmetry in size, shape, or implant position can also be addressed through revision surgery, sometimes requiring GalaSHAPE® 3D or Strattice™ for support.

Implant Site Change: Implant placement changes, including moving implants under the muscle, can improve the feel and appearance, particularly for patients with old saline implants experiencing "sloshing" issues. Dr. Chow replaces these implants with silicone gel options, resulting in a more natural look.

General Dissatisfaction: Another reason patients consider revision breast augmentation is general unhappiness with their appearance from a previous surgery. A revision procedure can often help individuals achieve the results they were hoping for, depending on the patient’s goals and wishes.  Patients dissatisfied with previous results can achieve their desired appearance through revisional breast surgery, tailored to their goals by Dr. Chow. Sometimes, the treatment is staged over multiple procedures instead of a single appointment.

Breast Revision FAQs

How often do breast implants need to be replaced?

Breast implants are typically expected to last from 10-20 years, although various concerns can arise that dictate a revision surgery sooner.

Does insurance cover breast implant revision?

If breast revision is medically necessary, it will often be covered by insurance carriers. If the procedure is performed for purely cosmetic reasons, no coverage will likely be issued.

Is breast implant revision painful?

Breast revision is usually a shorter procedure with slightly less downtime than the original breast augmentation procedure. Still, there will be swelling, bruising, and soreness to deal with. Your doctor will provide the appropriate pain medications and a compressive garment.

What is the recovery process like?

While recovery from breast revision surgery is quite similar to that of your primary augmentation, it may actually be swifter and more comfortable, as there is no breast capsule to build from scratch. You may experience mild swelling, bruising, and tenderness, however, but these side effects are well-managed with pain medications provided by Dr. Chow.

After your breast revision surgery in Austin, it's advisable to refrain from heavy lifting and strenuous activities for 2-3 weeks or as advised by your doctor. If you have children, consider arranging for assistance during the initial stages of your recovery. In most cases, clients can anticipate returning to their regular routines within 7-10 days.
